Autofocus is a separate system entirely — it controls sharpness, and getting it wrong is one of the most common reasons a beginner’s photo looks disappointing even when the exposure is perfect. This lesson covers the two core autofocus modes, how the camera decides where to focus, and the situations where switching to manual focus actually gets you a better result.

How Autofocus Actually Works

As we touched on back in Lesson 2, DSLRs use a dedicated autofocus sensor behind the mirror, relying on phase-detection — a fast, highly effective method for viewfinder shooting. Digital Camera World’s explanation of how autofocus works lays out the two competing methods clearly: phase-detection compares light entering from opposite sides of the lens to calculate focus almost instantly, while contrast-detection (used in Live View and on most mirrorless cameras) analyses the image itself for the sharpest edges, which is highly accurate but traditionally slower.

AF-S vs. AF-C: The Two Core Focus Modes

Nikon’s autofocus system offers two primary modes for viewfinder shooting, and the choice between them comes down to one question: is your subject moving?

  • AF-S (Single-servo AF): Best for stationary subjects. Press the shutter button halfway, the camera focuses once, and focus locks — Nikon’s documentation notes the shutter can typically only be released once the in-focus indicator confirms a lock, which prevents accidentally taking an out-of-focus shot.
  • AF-C (Continuous-servo AF): Best for moving subjects. The camera focuses continuously for as long as the shutter button is held halfway, actively tracking a subject as it moves closer or farther away, using predictive focus tracking to estimate where the subject will be at the moment the shutter fires.

Some cameras also offer AF-A (Auto-servo AF), which automatically chooses between AF-S and AF-C based on whether it detects the subject moving — a reasonable default when you’re not sure which mode a scene calls for, though most experienced photographers eventually pick AF-S or AF-C deliberately rather than leaving the decision to the camera.

Focus Points and AF-Area Modes

Autofocus doesn’t just decide when to focus — it also decides where in the frame to focus, and that’s controlled separately through AF-area mode. Nikon’s own documentation describes several options: Single-point AF lets you manually choose one focus point for a stationary subject; Dynamic-area AF is built for subjects in motion, using surrounding focus points to keep tracking if the subject briefly drifts off the selected point; and 3D-tracking follows a subject across the frame entirely on its own once you’ve selected it, reassigning the active focus point as the subject moves. Auto-area AF hands the whole decision to the camera, which detects a likely subject and focuses on it automatically.

Digital Camera World’s guide to sharpening your focusing technique makes a useful practical point: for a single static subject, choosing your own focus point and recomposing gives you more reliable control than letting the camera guess, especially in scenes with multiple people or objects where an automatic system might lock onto the wrong one.

When Autofocus Struggles

Autofocus systems need contrast and light to find a subject, and both AF-S and AF-C can fail — or hunt back and forth without locking — in a handful of predictable situations: very low light, low-contrast scenes like a plain wall or clear sky, subjects behind glass or fencing, and macro photography at very close focusing distances. Photography Life’s overview of focusing notes that manual focus exists precisely for these situations — moments when autofocus can’t find enough information in the scene to work reliably, and overriding it by hand is faster than fighting it.

When to Switch to Manual Focus

Manual focus isn’t a sign of more “advanced” photography, and it isn’t slower or better by default — it’s simply the right tool in specific situations:

  • Night and astrophotography: stars and dark scenes rarely give autofocus enough contrast to lock on.
  • Macro photography: at extreme close-focus distances, depth of field becomes razor-thin, and manual focus lets you place that thin plane exactly where you want it.
  • Low-contrast or repetitive scenes: a plain wall, foggy landscape, or scene shot through glass or a fence can make autofocus hunt indefinitely.
  • Video and tripod work: where a locked, unchanging focus point matters more than autofocus speed.

Outside of these situations, autofocus is faster and, in most modern cameras, at least as accurate as focusing by hand — there’s no need to default to manual just for the sake of it.

Why Understanding Autofocus Matters

Choosing the right AF mode and focus point is what separates a sharp, well-composed photo from a technically correct exposure that’s simply focused on the wrong thing. Combined with the exposure triangle from Lessons 3 through 6 and the camera modes from Lesson 7, autofocus is the last major piece of the puzzle before a beginner has genuine command over how their camera behaves in any situation.

What You Now Know About Autofocus

AF-S locks focus once for stationary subjects; AF-C tracks continuously for moving ones. AF-area modes control where the camera focuses within the frame, ranging from a single manually chosen point to fully automatic subject detection. Autofocus struggles in low light, low contrast, and extreme close-up situations — and that’s exactly when switching to manual focus, rather than fighting the autofocus system, gets you the sharper result.
