Condition
This Nikon D5500 shows no signs of wear on the camera body. There is a slight scratch on the LCD screen, but it does not affect visibility, touchscreen function, or the articulating hinge mechanism. Autofocus and shutter have both been confirmed functioning correctly. Shutter count: to be confirmed.
Overview
Released in January 2015 as the successor to the D5300, the Nikon D5500 was the first Nikon DSLR to feature a touchscreen display, built into a lighter carbon-fiber composite monocoque body that weighs roughly 60 grams less than its predecessor. It sits above Nikon’s entry-level D3000-series in the lineup, adding a more sophisticated 39-point autofocus system, a deeper handgrip, and built-in Wi-Fi — making it a strong fit for photographers who’ve outgrown a beginner camera but don’t need a full enthusiast body.
Sensor & Image Quality
The Nikon D5500 uses the same 24.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor design as its predecessor, the D5300, again omitting the optical low-pass filter to maximize resolved detail, at a small theoretical risk of moiré in fine repeating patterns. It’s paired with Nikon’s EXPEED 4 image processor, and its top native ISO of 25600 is a full, non-extended setting — an improvement over some earlier D5000-series models. Autofocus System
The D5500 steps up significantly from entry-level Nikon bodies with a 39-point autofocus system (9 cross-type) through Nikon’s Multi-CAM 4800DX module, including 3D subject tracking that uses the camera’s 2,016-pixel RGB metering sensor to help maintain focus on moving subjects. In Live View, the camera switches to contrast-detect autofocus with face-priority, wide-area, normal-area, and subject-tracking modes. This is a meaningfully more capable AF system than the 11-point setup found on Nikon’s entry-level D3000-series bodies, making the D5500 a better fit for casual sports, pets, and children.
Video Capabilities
The D5500 records Full HD 1080p video at up to 60/50/30/25/24 fps, plus 720p and VGA options, saved in .MOV format with H.264 compression. Unlike Nikon’s entry-level D3000-series bodies, the D5500 includes an accessory microphone jack in addition to its built-in stereo microphone, giving more flexibility for video work. A “Flat” picture control profile is also available, designed to preserve more dynamic range for colour grading in post-production.
Screen & Viewfinder
The standout feature of the D5500 is its 3.2-inch, 1,037k-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD — the first touchscreen ever fitted to a Nikon DSLR. The screen folds out to the side and rotates through roughly 270 degrees, useful for high-angle, low-angle, and forward-facing shooting. The optical viewfinder is a pentamirror design with approximately 95% frame coverage and 0.82x magnification, typical for a DSLR in this class.
Build Quality and Handling
The D5500 measures approximately 124 x 97 x 70mm and weighs approximately 420g body-only. Its carbon-fiber composite monocoque construction is both lighter and, according to Nikon, more durable than a traditional multi-piece body, and the deeper handgrip is a noticeable improvement in comfort over the D5300 it replaced. Nikon does not list dedicated weather sealing for this model. Battery life is rated by Nikon at approximately 820 shots per charge (CIPA standard) on the included EN-EL14a battery — solidly average for a DSLR in this class, though notably lower than the D3500’s rating, largely due to the D5500’s touchscreen and Wi-Fi drawing more power. The D5500 includes built-in Wi-Fi for wireless image transfer and remote shutter control via Nikon’s mobile app, in addition to a built-in pop-up flash with i-TTL metering support.
