The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G is one of the most capable used Nikon portrait lenses available for Nikon F-mount DSLR cameras, combining a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture with Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor autofocus and a compact, lightweight build. Introduced in 2012, it is designed for FX full-frame bodies but performs equally well on DX-format cameras, where it delivers an effective focal length of 127mm — a reach ideally suited to head-and-shoulder portraiture, event photography, and low-light work. Whether you shoot weddings, concerts, or environmental portraits, this lens produces sharp, natural-looking images at every aperture.

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G is a medium telephoto prime lens designed for Nikon’s FX-format DSLR cameras and fully compatible with DX-format bodies. On an FX body such as the D750, D810, or D850, it provides a classic 85mm field of view — the focal length long favoured by portrait photographers for the natural perspective compression and subject-to-background separation it produces. On a DX body, the effective field of view becomes approximately 127mm, placing the shooting distance at a comfortable remove from the subject.
Its primary applications are portraiture, weddings, events, concerts, and any situation where shooting in low or mixed light demands a fast aperture. The f/1.8 maximum aperture is two-thirds of a stop faster than f/2.8 zoom lenses and allows for shallow depth-of-field effects that cannot be replicated by slower glass. At 350g and 80 × 73mm, the lens adds minimal bulk to any kit.
Optical Construction
The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G is built around nine elements arranged in nine groups — a straightforward optical formula that prioritises light transmission and contrast over complex correction schemes. All elements carry Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating (SIC), a multi-layer coating that reduces ghosting and lens flare while maintaining consistent colour rendition across the aperture range.
The Internal Focus (IF) system keeps the overall barrel length constant during focusing — the lens does not extend or rotate as it tracks a subject. This design choice contributes to the lens’s compact dimensions and allows the use of circular polarising filters without requiring readjustment after focus is confirmed. The minimum focus distance is 0.8m (2.62 ft.) from the focal plane, yielding a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.12x.
The diaphragm uses seven rounded blades, producing smooth, circular out-of-focus highlights at wide apertures — a characteristic well-suited to the portrait and event work this lens is designed for.
Autofocus Performance
Autofocus is driven by Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which converts ultrasonic travelling waves into rotational energy to drive the focus elements without the gear noise associated with older screw-drive lenses. The result is near-silent focus operation — a practical advantage when shooting video, working in quiet venues, or photographing subjects who are sensitive to camera noise. The SWM also enables full compatibility with all Nikon F-mount DSLR bodies, including entry-level models such as the D3500 and D5600 that have no internal focus motor.
The M/A mode switch on the barrel allows instant override from autofocus to manual focus by simply turning the focus ring — there is no need to change the camera’s AF settings or release the shutter. This seamless handoff is useful when fine-tuning focus on a portrait subject’s eye or locking on a specific plane in a complex scene. Full manual operation is also available via the M setting.
Autofocus accuracy on the 85mm f/1.8G is high and consistent, performing on par with the more expensive 85mm f/1.4G in real-world conditions. AF speed is adequate for portrait and event work, though it is not designed as a tracking lens for fast action.
Build Quality and Handling
The lens body is constructed with a plastic exterior and a metal mount, a combination consistent with Nikon’s consumer prime line. A rubber gasket at the lens mount provides a degree of sealing at the camera interface; however, Nikon does not designate this lens as weather-sealed, and it should not be treated as such in rain or dusty field conditions.
Dimensions are 80mm diameter × 73mm length, and weight is 350g — confirmed from Nikon USA official specifications. The 67mm filter thread accepts standard screw-on filters. The lens hood supplied is the HB-62, which bayonets onto the front of the barrel and locks firmly without play. The M/A — M mode switch is located on the side of the barrel and is easily operable without removing the eye from the viewfinder.
Compatible Camera Bodies
The lens is compatible with all Nikon F-mount cameras in FX, DX, and FX in DX crop mode, and with 35mm film bodies. On DX bodies the effective focal length is approximately 127mm. Compatible bodies include the Nikon D3500, D5600, D7100, D7200, D7500, D750, D810, D850, and the full range of Nikon F-mount DSLRs.

Image Quality
Sharpness on the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G is a consistent strength. Centre sharpness is very high from wide open at f/1.8, and borders and corners deliver very good resolution throughout the aperture range. Stopping down to f/2.8 or f/4 brings the corners fully in line with the centre, at which point the lens is sharp across the entire frame.
Chromatic aberration and distortion are well controlled in real-world shooting. Vignetting is pronounced at f/1.8, as is typical for a fast prime, and clears substantially when stopping down to f/2.8. In-camera or post-processing correction profiles in Lightroom or Capture NX-D will neutralise residual vignetting at wide apertures.
Bokeh quality is a standout characteristic of this used Nikon portrait lens. The seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth, circular highlights in the out-of-focus areas, and the overall rendering of the background is pleasing for portrait work. While the bokeh does not quite match the benchmark set by 85mm f/1.4 lenses, it comes close — at a fraction of the cost.
