Condition

This particular Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is in excellent condition. The glass is clean and clear, free of marks, with excellent clarity throughout. The barrel shows only light wear consistent with careful handling, and the filter threads and rear element are in good order. Autofocus and the optical Image Stabilizer have both been confirmed fully functioning on this unit.

Overview

The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM was introduced in September 2009 alongside the EOS 7D, designed exclusively for Canon’s APS-C sensor cameras — the Rebel/Kiss series, 60D/70D/80D/90D, and 7D/7D Mark II lines. It is not compatible with full-frame EOS bodies. With the 1.6x crop factor, its 15-85mm focal range delivers a 35mm-equivalent field of view of approximately 24-136mm, covering genuine wide-angle work and useful short-telephoto reach in a single lens.

It was designed to replace the earlier EF-S 17-85mm IS USM, extending coverage three millimetres wider at the short end — a meaningful gain for interiors, landscapes, and tight spaces. At 575g and 87.5mm in length (without hood), it balances well on any EF-S compatible body and is solidly built enough to serve as a primary, everyday lens.

Optical Construction

The lens is built around a 17-element, 12-group optical formula, including one UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) element and three high-precision aspherical elements. The UD element controls chromatic aberration and secondary spectrum, while the aspherical elements correct distortion and field curvature across the zoom range.

Canon applied Super Spectra coatings to suppress flare and ghosting, helping maintain contrast and accurate colour rendition, and the lens uses lead-free glass throughout. Minimum focus distance is 0.35m, giving a maximum magnification of approximately 0.21x at 85mm — modest, but in line with comparable general-purpose zooms.

Image Stabilizer

Canon rates the optical Image Stabilizer in this lens at approximately 4 stops of shake correction, with automatic panning detection built in. Independent testing found the system highly effective in real-world use, extending sharp handheld shooting well beyond what unstabilized shutter speeds would normally allow, particularly at the wide end where slower shutter speeds are often needed indoors. IS operation is quiet and well-behaved, with no noticeable jolt when it activates.

Autofocus Performance

The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM uses Canon’s ring-type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) for autofocus, which was considered Canon’s best available AF system at the time of releaseIt is fast, accurate, quiet, and internally focusing, meaning the front element does not rotate or extend during autofocus.

The lens offers full-time manual focus (FTM) override, so the focus ring can fine-tune focus at any time without switching out of AF mode. The manual focus ring is narrow but smooth with no play. It’s compatible with Canon EF-S bodies natively, and with Canon’s EOS R-series mirrorless cameras via the EF-EOS R mount adapter (adapter not included).

Build Quality and Handling

The lens measures 81.6mm in diameter by 87.5mm in length (without hood) and weighs 575g, comparable in size and heft to other higher-end Canon EF-S zooms of its era. Construction uses high-quality engineering plastics with a textured exterior finish, and the lens has no weather sealing.

The zoom ring is generously sized and stiff enough to resist gravity zoom extension, and the inner barrel extends as you zoom toward 85mm, with reviewers noting the extension feels solid with no wobble. The 72mm filter thread is shared with several other Canon zooms, making filter ownership practical if you already shoot other EF or EF-S glass in that size. As a Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM built on the EF-S mount, it is APS-C only.

Image Quality

This lens has a strong reputation as one of the best general-purpose zooms Canon has produced for APS-C, and independent testing supports that. Centre and corner sharpness are both strong even wide open across most of the range, with only slight softening in the corners between 50-70mm at maximum aperture.

Vignetting is present but modest — roughly 1 stop of corner light falloff at wide-open apertures through most of the range, increasing at the extremes. Distortion is the lens’s main weak point, with noticeable barrel distortion at 15mm transitioning to moderate pincushion distortion through the middle of the zoom range; both distortion and chromatic aberration correct easily in post-processing software such as Lightroom or Canon’s Digital Photo Pro. Bokeh quality is rated as good. Overall, testers rank this lens as nearly equal in image quality to Canon’s well-regarded EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM.
