Overview
Canon announced the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM in August 2005 and released it in October 2005, the same month it reached photographers alongside Canon’s first consumer full-frame DSLR, the EOS 5D. It was designed to complete Canon’s f/4L zoom trilogy alongside the EF 17-40mm f/4L USM and EF 70-200mm f/4L USM, giving photographers a lightweight, weather-resistant, constant-aperture system spanning wide to short-telephoto.
On a full-frame body, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM delivers a true 24-105mm field of view. On an APS-C body with Canon’s 1.6x crop factor, the equivalent range becomes approximately 38-168mm, shifting the balance toward portrait and medium-telephoto use. Typical uses include travel, event and documentary work, environmental portraiture, and any situation calling for one lens to cover wide-angle through short telephoto.
Optical Construction
The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is built from 18 elements in 13 groups, including one Super-UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass element and three aspherical elements (two replica, one glass mold). The Super-UD element controls chromatic aberration across the zoom range, while the aspherical elements correct distortion and spherical aberration. An 8-blade circular aperture contributes to smooth, rounded background blur.
Minimum focus distance is 0.45m, giving a maximum magnification of 0.23x at 105mm. The lens is not compatible with Canon Extenders. Canon’s Super Spectra coating is applied throughout to control flare and ghosting.
