Overview
Canon’s EOS Rebel SL3 (also sold internationally as the EOS 250D and EOS Kiss X10) was announced on April 10, 2019, as the smallest and lightest DSLR in Canon’s lineup at the time. It succeeded the EOS Rebel SL2 with meaningful upgrades: the newer DIGIC 8 processor (first seen in the EOS M50 and professional EOS R), 4K video recording capability, and substantially improved battery life. Sensor & Image Quality
The SL3 carries a 24.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor (22.3×14.9 mm), delivering a maximum image size of 6,000×4,000 pixels at a 1.6× crop factor. Native ISO ranges from 100 to 25,600, with an expandable high setting (H2) extending to ISO 51,200. The DIGIC 8 processor handles RAW capture in Canon’s CR2 format as well as Canon’s newer C-RAW (compressed RAW) format, both recordable simultaneously with JPEG. Picture Control options include Scene Intelligent Auto modes, Creative Auto with real-time parameter adjustment, Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports, and Food modes—plus a new Smooth Skin setting for portraiture. Real-world high-ISO performance is clean for an entry-level sensor; sources note acceptable image quality through ISO 3200 in good light, with ISO 6400+ showing visible grain but remaining usable for social media and modest prints.
Autofocus System
In optical viewfinder mode, the SL3 uses a 9-point AF system with one cross-type point at center (sensitive at f/5.6). AF modes include One-Shot (single AF), AI Focus (single-to-continuous transition), and AI Servo (continuous tracking). Center-point AF response is fast—Imaging Resource measured full AF lag of 0.094 seconds, faster than average for an entry-level DSLR. The standout is Live View autofocus: the camera features Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF with 143 selectable AF points across the sensor, including Face Detection and the new Eye Detection AF. This makes live view shooting as responsive as viewfinder shooting, ideal for video, selfies, and vari-angle screen work. The metering sensor is a 63-zone evaluative system (TTL, full-aperture) with Evaluative, Centre-weighted, Spot, and Partial metering modes available.
Shooting Performance
The SL3 shoots continuously at 5 frames per second for unlimited JPEG frames and up to approximately 22 RAW frames (buffer depths improve with C-RAW option). Shutter speeds range from 1/4000 to 30 seconds, with Bulb mode; X-sync is 1/200 second. The focal-plane shutter is electronic. Card slot accommodates SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-I Speed Class 1 compatible) media. Battery model is the compact LP-E17 lithium-ion, CIPA-rated at 1,070 shots using the optical viewfinder (50% flash) or 1,630 shots at 23°C without flash—a significant improvement over the SL2. Live View mode draws more power, yielding 320 shots per charge. A dedicated charger ships with the camera.
Video Capabilities
Video recording debuts in the SL3 for the Rebel line: 4K UHD (3,840×2,160) at 24p and 25p (NTSC/PAL, both with heavy crop), and Full HD (1,920×1,080) at up to 59.94p. Format is MPEG-4 H.264 codec. The camera features a built-in stereo microphone and an external 3.5mm microphone input jack, allowing manual audio level adjustment during recording. Note: the 4K option uses a crop (approximately 1.7×) and does not support Dual Pixel CMOS AF; Full HD video and Live View stills shooting unlock full AF capabilities. There is no headphone output jack. Maximum clip length is limited by card capacity and file size; internal 4K clips are recorded in approximately 4 GB segments.
Viewfinder & Display
The optical viewfinder is an eye-level pentamirror (not pentaprism) with 95% frame coverage and 0.87× magnification—equivalent to 0.52× on a full-frame camera. The display is a 3.0-inch vari-angle LCD touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio and 1,040,000 RGB dots (1.04M pixels). The screen articulates fully, rotating up and down as well as side-to-side—perfect for selfies, overhead shots, or low-angle work. Live View autofocus leverages the Dual Pixel sensor architecture and offers 143 AF points with selectable FlexiZone modes, Face Detection, and Eye Detection.

The SL3 is a Canon EF-S mount camera, fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses. AF compatibility: older EF lenses without STM or USM motors will autofocus but may be slower than modern AF-S, STM, or USM designs.
